You Slept All Night, But You Are Still Exhausted

The fatigue that comes with MS can be overwhelming and come on quickly. The first year of MS often entailed a nap or two each day. I easily tired. Once tired, I could feel the shakiness permeate my spinal cord and travel down my legs. I had overdone it again. A short nap or rest usually helped this feeling of utter exhaustion.

The lesions on the spinal cord and brain cause this fatigue as a lot of energy is spent just getting the messages between the brain and out to the other body parts. Furthermore, restless sleep and the muscle weakness, leg spasms, tremors, and pain may also create fatigue. There is no real solution for this type of fatigue other than trying to handle your schedule, rest when possible, and eat and sleep on time. On time for me means before 8 p.m.

I find walking helps energize me and keeps my muscles strong. For arm and core strength, I have fallen in love with battle ropes. These two exercises also help me fall asleep. Lose weight to help with what your muscles need to deal with and finally, eat well and rest when possible. After the first year, I began to feel much more stable and less likely to need a nap. Having said that, I do on occasion curl up for a noon rest.
