Cog fog is a common aspect that persons with MS deal with. For active and engaged people, this is an aha moment to come to terms with. Some days my ability is limited to doing simple tasks one at a time; otherwise, confusion and a lack of productivity kicks in. For example, if I am in the middle of typing a response and am asked a question, I can lose my concentration on the typing task. Truly, this leads to frustration. The dangers of cog fog for me are forgetting the task that I am doing, misplacing items, or extreme fatigue. Particularly noisy or crowded places can bring on cog fog as well. I have noticed that when I have to go shopping, once home, I am exhausted.
What helps? I find drinking cold water, deep breathing, slowing down, and learning to be a single processor rather than a multitasker is extremely helpful. The DMT do not help in the suppression of cog fog although they seem to help with the suppression of episodes of myelin sheath damage. More brain research is needed to see what can help alleviate this issue because the vast majority (70%) of persons with MS experience this condition.
