Mind over Matter Does Not Always Work: So Much for Self-Efficacy

Self-efficacy means that you believe that you have the ability to do something. However, sometimes with MS, it is not the belief in your ability to do something that gets in the way of doing it. Instead, it is the energy and cognitive labor required to do that very thing you believe that you can do interrupts your actions.

You can manage physical and emotional responses and outwardly appear fine. However, when your signals don’t move from the brain through the CNS to your limbs in a fluent manner, acting on your belief that you can do something does not amount to accomplishing the action.

MS impedes, slows, or impacts self-efficiency in a variety of ways, and this has nothing to do with the belief of what you can do.

Don’t be discouraged. Maybe the desired action is not accomplished today, but you can still get to it later.
