About two weeks ago, I was walking with my husband when boom; I found myself face planted into the asphalt and blood on my face. I was so stunned that I just sat in the middle of the road. A rock was in the road, and it was just enough to catch my foot and roll, and the result was a fall…my fourth. The other three falls were in the grass on unsteady ground, but those did not hurt as badly. After righting myself, I humbly took my husband’s handkerchief to wipe the blood off. I realized that this is just par for the course.
I need to be aware of what is on the pavement or grass where I place my feet. Before MS, I could have caught myself; in fact, I don’t recall ever falling. Two black eyes and a bump on my forehead are a reminder to slow my roll, focus on the ground, and use my walking sticks when I am hoofing it. These three strategies are manageable and are now how I get in my walks.
