Easy on the Sweets!

Who doesn’t love slice of decadent slice of cake, a sliver of pie, or a sweet dessert coffee? Filled with flavor and sugary goodness, these are on my list of items to take in very small doses. This is not to say, I do not sometimes crave them. I do.

Diet is so important to how I feel and my ability to move. Keeping a healthy gut in order to influence my immune response to the erosion of my nerves’ mylin sheaths is another concern. I have noticed that sugar and too many breads and flour-based goodies increase my stiffness, imbalance, and fatigue. Thank you MS; I never had these issues before.

Aging and MS demands that I slow my roll to the dessert table. My husband loves the sweets and is able to eat his fill without consequence. I have learned to find pleasure in watching others eat desserts of all sorts, or I have a small portion. By choice, fruit is my best friend for an after meal sweet treat. In this bountiful summer season, I have a lot of choices.

To maintain my healthy weight, I live on low calorie density items like salad greens, tasty herbs, fresh vegetables, and water-filled fruit. A scattering of nuts, eggs, and feta vary my salad choices. These give me the pleasure chewing without the high number of calories.

Yes, I still imagine sinking my teeth into a large, soft, frosting-covered donut, but it is not going not to happen. I think I should drink another glass of water!
