As a means to tackle the MS anxieties I have struggled with for the past year and a half years, I have taken on three specific activities:
- I use the imagery of a mental container to place those situations that provoke anxiety. This helps me categorize stressors and have the power to put them somewhere other than inside my body. I just use a basketball hand gesture to put some anxiety-producing thoughts or situations into my container. What I have found is that once put in, these thoughts or situations do not come back out to pester me.
- I have taken some breathing classes and am incorporating Ujjayi breathing and Bellows Breathing to ward off anxiety and fatigue. These simple exercises can be done anywhere, and they have quick results. We live a life without thinking about how important and helpful deep breathing can be. Deep breathing resets me mentally and physically.
- Making my own bread has become my weekend go to, and I am having a blast. The kneading is a great time to offer some negative thoughts a venue to get pounded out(LOL!), and I build arm strength at the same time. Besides, the yummy smell of yeast permeates the house and relaxes me. I use an Raisenne Dough Riser (XL) to help promote even rising and cut the time I have to endure before baking the loaves.
I am seeking go-to activities to help myself. These tend to be actions and not just thoughts. Movement also helps rest when the time comes to do that.
