No one choses to be hit by lightening. Yet, MSers experience the shock of this specific nerve pain called Lhermitte’s Sign often in the most unsuspecting of times.
What does Lhermitte’s sign feel like?
Lhermitte’s sign is typically described as a sudden, intense “buzzing” feeling, akin to an electric shock feeling in the spine. The sensation of electrical jolts typically starts in the neck, in the cervical spinal cord, and then “radiates” in waves down the spine and out into other parts of the body. Patients describe it as a “wave-like feeling” or “wave sensation” through the body. (https://multiplesclerosisnewstoday.com/multiple-sclerosis-symptoms/lhermittes-sign)
Neck movement or generally looking downward can bring on this “electrical sensation”, and it is a definite sensation that lasts a short while. Just consider how many times you look down across the day. Some medical providers told me that this occurs in the first stages of MS. I have found that this is not necessarily true. This is one type of the constant reminders in the catalog of the disease’s nerve damage.
On the bright side, this fleeting is a strong reminder to live each day and to be active and present. I choose joy rather than then doldrums.
