Pleasure in the little things

I find myself reflecting on the kindness of others and then seeking opportunities myself to do random acts of kindness. We live in a violent world, so small acts of kindness can be very helpful for those in need.

This summer, I have found pleasure in doing small things for others and with others:

Yesterday I went with a friend to pick blueberries; we each found our special spots and picked more than 7 pounds. So delicious!

The other day, I saw a gentleman in a wheelchair stuck in the middle of a very busy intersection. He was holding up traffic, yet he was unable to get his chair across the intersection. I got out of my car and helped him across the street. I got a thumbs up from the bus driver and a thank you from the gentleman. That small action made two people happy.

Helping a young woman pay her tuition for her Master’s degree today ensures a successful future with more work opportunities. Education can change lives.

Making a cup of green tea each afternoon is a ritual that we enjoy in our home. I do this small action to ensure we slow down, have a chat, and savor the flavor of the green tea. Simple acts.

I water my neighbors flowers when they are out of town. This gives me a slow paced activity to enjoy the beautiful of her plantings.

After my MS diagnosis, I have tried to seek out and savor small actions. These keep me grounded and feeling positive about my life. I can not help but think about what a better world we can make through small acts of kindness.
